Should we be afraid of IMSG? If you're doing Ironman St George and have not yet seen Coach Rich's Ironman St. George Scouting Report, stop what you're doing a take a look. (Click here to read.) Rich is a very qualified, experienced, and passionate coach. I trust his judgment and what he has to say about any race. That said, let's stay grounded. Use the information to help you focus; not to invite self doubt or fear. A few thoughts to help you put things into perspective.

Train on similar territory. Attached, you will find a bike elevation charts comparing IMSG, Solvang, GMR, and IM Louisville courses. Our own local bike ride (from an elevation perspective) appears to be relatively comparable to IMSG. A 20-30 mile ride out to Gendora, up GMR to the shack twice, then back. While to total mileage is not the same, it looks like you will experience similar type climbing. Everyone I know doing IMSG can do this.

Worry only about those things you can control. The weather and the Flu seem to be bigger obstacles to worry about this season because the impede our ability to train. So stay healthy and consistent with your training. If you can't train outdoors, train indoors. Most Ironman PRs don't happen on the easier courses. They happen on the courses wher you've done your homework.

Any Ironman is difficult. You wouldn't have chosen to do and Ironman if it was easy. A run coparison chart is n the works and my own recon trip is scheduled for mid April when I will post my observations of the IMSG course.

Stay tuned.
